Business and Industry -- closing discussionISSS Meeting at Asilomar, June 28-July 2, 1999
These participant's notes were created in real-time during the meeting, based on the speaker's presentation(s) and comments from the audience. These should not be viewed as official transcripts of the meeting, but only as an interpretation by a single individual. Lapses, grammatical errors, and typing mistakes may not have been corrected. Questions about content should be directed to the originator. These notes have been contributed by Ian Simmonds at the IBM TJ Watson Research Center ( http://www.research.ibm.com ). Enrique: Want to come back to an important issue -- the warfare. I was on a committee to come up with a code of ethics, and wanted to insist that we not do work for the military. Mikka: "only killing" is an out-dated view of the military: what about peace keeping? Enrique: Costa Rica is the only (South American) country without a military. Ely Dorsey: This SIG should include discussion of the deconstruction of the military. Ian Simmonds: I'm really reluctant to banish any form of societal knowledge. A proven and reliable military (if and when it is needed -- and hopefully it won't be) is better than either "none" or the rag-tag that emerges when none exists. Brian: We should remember that the origins of ISSS and systems analysis Enrique Herrscher. Recommends Arthur Koestler's book the Call Girls.
It's about meetings like this - the ISSS! Should we just discuss science,
or the well-being of the world.
