WORKSHOPS AND TUTORIALS

Monday 1:15-3:15 in Surf & Sand meeting room

Helmut (Ken) Burkhardt

Research Toward General Theories of Systems - Concept Workshop

This workshop is about freeing common concepts such as 'work', 'energy', and 'power' from their narrow scientific straight jacket, and on adapting of scientific terms such as 'entropy' and 'information' in the soft sciences and in plain English. Communication between the 'two cultures' requires an unambiguous vocabulary.

Monday 7:15-8:15 in Chapel Hall

Len Troncale

Placing “Stealth” Systems Science in the General Education Curriculum of Every U.S. University

This evening workshop will consist of a dramatic computerized multimedia presentation of the current status of the Integrated Science General Education (ISGE) Program funded by the California State University System and the National Science Foundation. The ISGE Program uses systems concepts as integrative themes to unify and synthesize the teaching of seven sciences (Astronomy, Physics, Chemistry, Geology, Biology, Mathematics, and Computer Science).

Monday 7:15-9:15 in Hill Top living room

Bob Kull

Celebrate Living! Journey into the Domain of Storytelling
Are you a storyteller? Do you have the urge to be? Come and tell us a tale; a story from your life or the life of the world. Tell us, perhaps, of your spiritual wanderings: dark days and light. Or yarn about nights of longing and excess. Your choice. If you’d rather just listen, bring a drink and settle by the fireplace awash in the babble of our lives together.

Tuesday 7:15-8:15 in Chapel Hall

J. D. R. de Raadt and V. D. de Raadt

Systems in Decision making: Tools and Applications

The purpose of this session is to present systems ideas at work in the service of people in need. The workshop concerns two applications of multi-modal systems modelling in Sweden and a demonstration of the computer package developed for these applications. The first of these applications is helping a small group of village leaders in Northern Sweden retain their village school and ensure the long-term viability of their village (Rosvik).

Wednesday 1:15-3:15 in Dolphin meeting room`

John van Gigch

Tutorial: a Primer on metamodeling

The tutorial on Modeling and metamodeling is primarily based on the author's two books on the subject. (John P. van Gigch, SYSTEM DESIGN MODELING AND METAMODELING, PLENUM, 1991; PROBLEMS HAVE LOGIC LEVELS, Copyright, Sacramento, CA, 1998,1999)

Wednesday 7:15-8:15 in Chapel Hall

Robert A. Orchard

Validation of Systemic Models

In order for systemic models to be taken seriously, particular attention must be paid to their validation. This workshop addresses validation of the models presented during the Systems Modeling and simulation sessions. The work to be discussed includes validation of the system dynamics approach of Reese & Reese, twelve validations of the model of Lattore, and the work of Bashias on validation of measures of consistency.

Wednesday 7:15-8:15 in Marlin meeting room

John A. Broadbent

Workshop: 'Design and Sociocultural Evolution'

Workshop purpose A research group at the University of Technology, Sydney, Australia is exploring the relationship between design and sociocultural evolution, to elaborate Banathy's(1989) notion of design as an evolutionary guidance system. Through the proposed workshop, it is hoped that this project can benefit from the considerable expertise present at the 43rd meeting of the International Society for the Systems Sciences. The workshop might also foster international collaboration on this project.

Thursday 7:15-8:15 in Chapel Hall

Dennis Finlayson

Systems and Development: Past Neglect, Future Contribution?

The intention of this workshop is to offer a naive view of the relationship between systems and development studies with the intention of provoking more interest amongst systems people in the problems of the developing world, or perhaps in the middle of 1999, the ‘nonwesternised’ world.

Thursday 7:15-8:15 in Dolphin meeting room

Curt McNamara

Workshop : Introduction to Geometric Systems Design

Join us in this workshop for a brief introduction to GSD. We will start with a conversation about structure -- how the world is connected together. In our papers and models we represent these connections with words and equations, but there are other representations we can use. The purpose of the workshop is to give attendees "hands-on" experience with 3D structural models. There will be samples of models from several vendors, and participants will be able to take home some low-cost modeling materials. Participation limited to the first 20 people. The workshop may be repeated at breakfast on Friday if there is interest.
